2024 is an anniversary year for both Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852–1924), a composer and teacher who needs little introduction (though, arguably, a wider and more thoughtful appreciation), and Sir Walter Parratt (1841–1924), a close friend and colleague of Stanford. This essay by Andrew McCrea, Editor of the RCO Journal, mainly looks at Parratt, a famous organist and teacher, especially through the Stanford association. They both breathed the same institutional and creative air at the newly founded Royal College of Music, and, it is argued, inspecting Stanford’s dedications to Parratt can enrich our understanding of these two national figures.
