Emerging from the organ loft: concertante music for organ from Handel to Russell

This is an edited transcription of a lecture given at St George’s Hanover Square, London in April 2003 as part of that year’s London Handel Festival. Organised in collaboration with the Royal College of Organists and the Handel House Museum, the event to which this lecture was an introduction was entitled ‘Emerging from the
Organ Loft: A Celebration of Concertante Music for Organ, Other Instruments and Voices’. Six College members (Stephen Bryant, Dorothy Davis, Jack Day, Duncan Ferguson, Stephen Grahl and Joanna Paul) took part in a workshop on concertante organ repertoire (led by a seventh, Laurence Cummings), after which six works—by Handel, William Hayes, Mantel, and Hook (composers mentioned in this text)—were performed by the members in concert.

Andrew McCrea made this transcription of the lecture which was given by Robin Langley (1942-2004), who was College Librarian from 1990 to 2003, and it first appeared in the RCO Journal of 2007.
