Where do we as ‘classical’ musicians stand, be we performers, teachers, examiners, promoters, listeners, or any combination of the above? Do we accept the status quo and acknowledge that we are just another niche interest in a crowded market place? Do we stand firm and hope that the integrity of our art will carry us through, or that market forces may be more favourable towards us in the future? Do we attempt to redress the balance by promoting our art to a wider audience? Daniel Moult discusses these questions in the context of the 'Stops Away!' programme, which used the organ of Manchester's Bridgewater Hall to bring large numbers of schoolchildren to experience music both in the classroom and in performance.
