  The growing practice of hymn singing in the Anglican Church throughout the 19th century inspired the publication of scores of different hymnals, most notably Hymns Ancient & Modern, which has gone through at least seven different editions since its first publication in 1851.  As editions have come and gone, many hymn texts, along with their tunes, have been jettisoned to make space for more recent compositions and to prevent books becoming unwieldy.
